The Downfall of American Centennial

American Centennial was founded back in 1970 with the intention of underwriting for liability policies. There is no record of whether or not the company ever sold car insurance, but the majority of the company’s business was through multinational pharmaceutical companies as well as chemical and manufacturing businesses.

They provided company wide insurance and specialized in providing solutions that were specific to each industry.

The company has always had trouble in staying above water. For the last quarter century, American Centennial has been traded about as many times as a baseball card. They’ve been merged and bought and sold several times and this has resulted in the company being denied recognition by many major financial ratings companies. For this reason, they don’t even have a rating with AM Best, the Better Business Bureau or Weiss Ratings as of the time being.

Once located in Delaware, the company is no longer licensed to sell insurance in that state. American Centennial, then, is a good example of a company that has fallen on hard times, and the recession has only made things worse, not easier, for American Centennial.

They once held a major office in California, and maintain a license there today, but have little business there these days.

Something that really hit the company was their taking on a series of asbestos exposure insurance policies and then honoring them in the 1990’s. Around this time, they had begun offering home insurance in addition to their other policies, and this simply proved to be a bad time to try and expand.

The company still had to pay these claims even as their backers pulled out, wanting nothing to do with asbestos exposure. This downward spiral led to the company today being more or less defunct, even if they still technically exist.
